God’s dream for the children of Guanacaste
Academia Valo - Christian education support program for the children of the rural villages of Nicoya canton
At YWAM Nicoya we have been carrying God’s dream of a Christian private school - Academia Valo.
For the last two years we have actively taken steps towards fulfilling the big dream. The work and bureaucracy towards such a big dream takes time.
We felt challenged to start something concrete now. 9th of April 2024 was the first day of Mini Valo, a tutoring program we now arrange twice a week for students from five nearby villages. Wide-eyed but eager students arrived at our mission base to get more inspiring afternoon classes in different school subjects like reading, maths and English but also arts and P.E. We have been encouraged and touched by how big and palpable a need we are tackling.
Running the program, we realized an evident need for our own private classrooms - just fo the tutorial classes. We want to provide a safe, flexible and child-friendly space for better learning.
August-December 2024 we invited hundreds of people to participate in the challenge to buy two container classrooms (with the total amount of $20.000). The good news is that God has provided and the classroom arrived in December!
What we need now
to continue with the vision
In faith we started giving classes this February even though the classrooms still need a lot of improvements such as:
We need the classrooms to be connected to electricity, water and septic : $1700
Furnitures (chair, desks, shelves) : $1500
A deck between the two classrooms: $3750
A roof between the two classrooms (most of the school year happens under heavy rains): $3250
A simple security fence in front of the property: $1200
A metal gate that can be locked: $1200
The total need to have this completed is around $13.800

Joyous feedback from Mini Valo
Joy of learning has been one of our big themes we believe the kids need and God wants to give. We have received feedback showing God has used us for that.
"Lugar Maravilloso" a wonderful place is how an 8-year-old described Mini-Valo at YWAM Nicoya base after getting afternoon classes every Tuesday for the first month.
"I get it! I get it! Now I get it!" shouts another 8-year-old with joy that brings tears to eyes of the teacher going over ones, tens and hundreds with the group.
"Mini Valo is like an answer to my prayers. My son really enjoys coming and I can see how fulfilled he is. There is so much different content in each lesson, and I love it that you use the Bible as part of the teaching.” shared an 8-year-old boy’s mother. She kept wondering why her son was so happy and content Tuesday evenings after Mini Valo. She wanted to feel the same and started visiting our Family Night gatherings on Mondays. Then she wanted even more and now comes to the base as a volunteer to help us once a week and study Bible with some of our staff!
"We have a math test next week on the pizza slice thing we did here last week." said an 11-year-old with new confidence in her voice. She and another girl had come without any clue how fractions work, but where now waiting for the test with a smile on their face.
An 11-year-old girl who comes on Thursday, has been more reserved and never prayed out loud. Then we had a ballet dancer give them a lesson at the end of one class. When we finished with a prayer, she praised out loud and thanked God for dreams coming true.
